COASTAL AND BEACH DESTINATIONS

COASTAL AND BEACH DESTINATIONS

Ten stretches of coast, each with its own season and its own character.
Sri Lanka’s coastline changes completely depending on which stretch you are standing on, from the established resorts of the west and south to the surf towns and coral reefs further east.

Bentota

Sri Lanka’s most established beach resort area.

Sri Lanka’s most established beach resort area, with calm waters, a wide choice of hotels and the Bentota River running alongside for mangrove safaris and water sports. A reliable, well-serviced option for travellers who want a straightforward beach stay.

Hikkaduwa

An accessible reef and a livelier beach town atmosphere.

An accessible coral reef paired with a livelier, more social beach town atmosphere than the quieter stretches further south, with a strong surf scene and turtle conservation projects nearby for an easy half-day addition.

Where to Stay: Beachfront hotels

In Our Packages: Available as an extension on the south coast

Unawatuna

A sheltered reef bay minutes from Galle Fort.

A curved, sheltered bay close enough to Galle Fort to work as a same-day pairing, with a shallow coral reef just offshore that makes it one of the easiest snorkelling spots on the south coast. A natural half-day extension for travellers based in Galle.

Where to Stay: Beachfront guesthouses and boutique hotels

In Our Packages: Available as an extension from any Galle-based package

Trincomalee

One of Asia’s finest natural harbours, and a season all its own.

One of Asia’s finest natural harbours, with Koneswaram Temple dramatically perched on Swami Rock above the water, and Pigeon Island’s coral gardens a short boat trip offshore. The east coast season runs April to September, calm and clear exactly when the south coast is at its wettest.

Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka’s premier surf town, home to Main Point.

Sri Lanka’s premier surf town, home to Main Point, one of the world’s best right-hand point breaks, alongside a relaxed, low-key atmosphere and Pottuvil Lagoon’s boat safaris just inland. The main surf season runs April to October, with June to September the most consistent.

Where to Stay: Surf-side boutique hotels

In Our Packages: Featured across all three Wild Frontier Collection tours

Tangalle

Wide, quiet beaches with more space than the resorts further west.

A wide, quiet stretch of south coast with considerably more space and privacy than the busier resorts further west, and Rekawa Beach, a sea turtle nesting site, close by for an easy evening excursion. It suits travellers who want a slower coastal finish after an active circuit.

Weligama

A long, forgiving bay that turns first-timers into surfers in a single lesson.

A long, gently curling bay with one of Sri Lanka’s most forgiving beginner surf breaks, backed by a working fishing harbour and a growing run of genuinely good coastal restaurants. It suits travellers who want a first surf lesson without the intensity of a more advanced break.

Mirissa

A deep water canyon with some of the world’s most reliable whale sightings.

A south coast beach town built around one of the world’s most reliable blue and sperm whale migration corridors, alongside a genuinely good beach and the postcard view from Coconut Tree Hill. Pre-dawn boat departures from November to April give strong odds of a sighting, with a Polhena Reef snorkelling trip offered outside season.

Galle

A UNESCO fort layered with Portuguese, Dutch and British history.

A UNESCO World Heritage fort layered with Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial history. Galle Fort still functions as a living town rather than a preserved museum piece, with boutique hotels, independent galleries and a Dutch Reformed Church from 1755 all inside 17th century coral-stone ramparts above the Indian Ocean. The rampart walk at golden hour is the moment most travellers remember longest.

Where to Stay: Boutique fort-area hotels

In Our Packages: Featured in nearly every package as the closing chapter

Negombo

The gateway coastal town, minutes from the airport.

The gateway coastal town, minutes from the airport, with a working fish market and lagoon. Negombo’s Dutch canal network and lagoon fishing villages give it considerably more depth than a simple arrival stop, with traditional catamaran fishing still practised much as it has been for generations. It works naturally as a first or last night on almost any itinerary, easing the transition either side of a long-haul flight.

Where to Stay: Boutique beachfront hotels

In Our Packages: Featured as the arrival or departure stay in most packages
